He left a rich legacy of athletic achievements and regard for human values through a coaching career spanning three decades. He attended Spearfish Normal for two years in 1908 and 1909 before transferring to Colorado College where he received his bachelor’s degree. He captained the football and track teams for two years at Colorado College.

During his tenure at Fort Collins High School, George enjoyed success in the prep ranks. His track teams won three national championships, enjoying 18 consecutive titles. As football coach, his teams won eight titles, posting a record of 116-6. Scott was also athletic director at Colorado School of Mines and coached football, track and swimming in 1935 and 1936. The following year he was named Dean at Trinidad Junior College and was assigned coaching duties in both track and football. In 1939, his team finished second in the national junior college track meet. Two years later, his track team won the JC national championship.
